My contacts are in GMAIL. How do I get THunderbird to use those?

Just installed Thunderbird on my Win 10 PC. I would like it to use all the contacts I already have in Gmail (about 2,500). To avoid duplicating by importing, can't they share? If not, how do I import from Gmail to Thunderbird?

I have not used it so I cannot comment on if or how well it works.
