get rid of bright white background on web pages
I need to change the background color behind text to something other than bright white to lessen the eye strain I'm experiencing. Although I can change the color in Windows 7, when I'm online web pages still have that white background, and for older eyes this is a problem.

no-squint is better then custom colors of Firefox, but it still misses some buttons (hidden in background color which can be read on hover by tool tips), it also disabled pictures on Facebook albums (can see only background color instead of picture, for some tagged pics it shows dark square in tag area which blocks part of picture).

You can use the NoSquint extension to set font sizes (text/page zoom) and text colors on web pages.
Text size is not the problem. The bright white background color is the problem.
Whoops...my mistake...I installed it, and it helps quite a bit, although some areas of this page are still bright white, but not areas where I'm reading. Thanks...
You're welcome
You could try Options>Content>Fonts and Colors>Colors>Background.
Play around with this for a while. There aren't many suitable colors but I use a creamy white for blank pages. You can check or uncheck "Allow pages to use their own colors . . ."
It is better to use the NoSquint extension. If you disable background colors or make other color changes then you get problems with website that use background images for buttons and possibly other problems. NoSquint works much better in that aspect.
No real argument from me. I allow pages to use their own colors and only modify blank pages. I use About:Blank as my home page and often clear all my tabs leaving me with a blank page which I have moderated only slightly.
I do doubt, though, if the slight creamy modification that I use, just to take the shine off, would have any material impact on webpages.

It is almost impossible to make web page look correctly if background images and background colors are used extensively. If it goes wrong the your only option is to tweak pages manually with code in userContent.css or Stylish using the DOM Inspector to analyze the page layout or ask advice on the Stylish forum.
The customization files userChrome.css (interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the user profile folder.
You can use the ChromEdit Plus or Stylish extension to have easier access to the customization files.
