Hi Friends, I was trying to move the Homepage icon from where it is now, to lie between the address field and search field. I notice when the Customize Toolbar dialog is open, the toolbar looks much different than it does when it's closed. I have screenshots, but I don't see where to upload files. Maybe after I post this I'll see it.

So 2 questions -- Is it possible to move the Homepage icon, to lie between address and search? -- Why does the toolbar look different while the Customize Toolbar dialog is open? Because I like how the Refresh and Stop Loading icons are separated from the address field, when the dialog is open. But after I close the dialog, they become part of the address field.

I've read through various Help articles, and not found the answers. Although perhaps I haven't found the right article?

Thanks for your help :-)

If you place the Home button between the location bar and search bar then you need to place the Home button to the right of the two Reload and Stop buttons if the Customize window is open.

Firefox 4 and later use a combined Stop/Reload/Go button that is positioned at the right end of the location bar.

  • During the page load process it shows as a Stop button and after the loading has finished the button is changed to a Reload button.
  • If you type in the location bar then that button becomes a Go button.
  • Middle-click or hold the Ctrl key and left-click the Reload button to duplicate the current tab to a new tab.
  • Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize"
  • If the menu bar is hidden on Windows or Linux, use "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"

You can drag the Reload and Stop buttons to their previous position to the left of the location bar.

  • Set the order to "Reload - Stop" to get a combined "Reload/Stop" button.
  • Set the order to "Stop - Reload" or separate them otherwise (Space or Separator) to get two distinct buttons.
  • Click the "Restore Default Set" button to reset the two buttons to their default position.

Oooh ok, thank you very much!

I couldn't get the home button to move at all. But when I had the Customize Toolbar dialog open to try and change the reload and stop buttons, I tried to move the home button. So I can move it when the dialog is open.

Thank you. Now I have the toolbar how I like it :-)

I still don't understand why it looks different with the dialog open. It's really confusing for new users, because you make a change, but the change doesn't appear to happen. It's only after closing the dialog, that the changes take effect.

If someone could answer that, I'll still be watching this topic. But otherwise, I'll mark it solved.

Thanks again :-)

You're welcome

There are actually two sets of buttons and one set or a specific button is hidden via CSS rules if certain conditions are met.

See line 1338 in the browser .css file.

  • chrome://browser/content/browser.css

you can open this file via the location bar.
