Since this morning Thunderbird is unresponsive. After startup I got a message that I should check whether I want Thunderbird my standard e-mail client. I did. Now it does not work anymore. Toiny Rademakers.

Your description sounds like you lost your thunderbird profile, which contains the defintion for your accounts and preferences. Does that sound correct?
