For other reasons (couldn't open web pages) I did a MS Recovery where it claimed my personal data would be spared. Some aps would need to be reloaded but the data should remain. I have been using Mozilla for a few years (great program, BTW) and had created an address book and had folders of received email that I had archived according to family member.

Since the recovery step completed I have re-installed Mozilla. It is working and has pulled new email from my EarthLink account. I'd like to now re-install the address book and my archived email folders assuming they are truly still around.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

Windows will not preserve the following during a refresh:

Desktop applications that are not included with Windows. These are typically applications that you downloaded from the Internet or installed from a disk. This includes any anti-virus programs, games, or other applications you may have installed. To make it easier to reinstall your applications, a file will be created on your desktop listing the applications that were removed.

I doubt the Thunderbird profile has been preserved, otherwise Thunderbird would have picked it up after being re-installed.

Be more careful the next time, and make sure to create a backup of your profile on a regular basis. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Backing_Up_and_Restoring

Thank you for your replies. After having further problems I did a complete re-image of my HDD. A virus had trashed things pretty good. I am now running Win8.1 and it appears the new File History feature has some possibilities. I already have several data files in one of the default libraries which will make back up of this data simple. I would like to put my address book and archive email in this same location so it too can be backup using this same tool.

I believe I now know how to redirect the mail archives to a self selected file location. Can I specifiy where my address book data is kept? If I can I'll simply put it in my default data library and let File History back things up.
