This is not a Windows system sound and occurs only when I'm online with Firefox. Uninstalling and reinstalling the browser didn't fix it. It sounds somewhat like the Windows system notification sound but lower pitched, more resonant and louder. The interval between the sounds ranges from 20 seconds to 45 seconds.

Firefox itself does not make noise. But add-ons and other programs do.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?
