How can I prevent loss of stars from unopened messages in my inbox when I am ,expanding thedisplay, searching my sent box or doing other unrelated operations

When I depart from displaying my Inbox -- for example, to look at my Sent folder, or for some other purposes, all starred m the Inbox lose their stars irretrievably. How can I preserve stars on Inbox messages until I decide to un-star them?
