how can I recall items on hold while I look up something else

I received an email which asked for a certain number. I hit - ( in the first of the three box items in the upper right hand corner of the screen) to look up the number on another file, and when I tried to recall...I couldn't.

Which operating system are you using? I don't think this question is specifically about Thunderbird.
