How to fix blinking cursor and disfunctionality caused by clicking a link?

When I click any link contained in an email message my cursor blinks and Thunderbird functionality is disrupted until I restart my computer.

please explain what that means. I click a link and a web page opens and that is about it.

So start with assuming I have no idea how to get it to do what you are seeing, whatever that is.
