How to prevent Thunderbird's "Failed to connect to server" popups when offline?

more options

When going offline, Thunderbird shows a popup saying "Failed to connect to server X" each time it tries to connect to a server. How can I fix this behaviour? The "work offline" box is automatically checked when I go offline.

go offline in Thunderbird before you actually take the device offline. (Little blue monitor icons in the bottom left of the status bar.)
