Which is newer, version 3.6.19 or Firefox 5.0.1.dmg. Mac OS says 3.6.19 is newer.
I receive a notice that a new version of Firefox is available. I say download now. It does, and then it says Firefox has downloaded and will start the next time you start Firefox. I choose Restart Now and ask it to save my windows. It does. I click on the icon <Firefox 5.0.1.dmg> and get the prompt to move the Firefox icon to the Applications folder. I do. I get a dialogue box that warns the version I already have in Applications is newer than the one I am moving to Applications and do I really want to do this. I say no. Forget it.

Firefox 3.6.19 and 5.0.1 were released same day (July 11) to workaround a certain font issue (that could cause crashes) that was not fixed in time for Mac OSX 10.7 Lion release and 5.0.1 was also for to fix problem of java plugin not loading on OSX 10.5

5.0.1 release notes say 10.6 but it really is 10.5 for Java plugin.
Technically Firefox 5.0 is newer as 3.6.19 is just another minor update (firedirll in this case) for the old 3.6 branch.
