I have a new laptop w/win7. I am trying to open my public radios streaming music. FF responds that I need the win media player 11 plug-in. I have the win media player 12 on this machine. Why do I need the media player 11 plug-in?

You need the plugin to enable Firefox to embed the player on a web page.
