Under Bookmarks, suddenly 30! listings for identical Bookmarks Bar folder and 30! for identical Favorites Bar folder. I can't delete them.
Don't know what happened, but suddently, under "bookmarks" tab, my list of saved bookmarks is marred by about 30 identical folders for Bookmarks Bar and about 30 for Favorites Bar folder. Every folder is the same, full of other sites. I try to delete these folders, but "Delete" function doesn't seem to be working. Maybe if I learned why this happened in the first place....

Sounds that you have a corrupted places.sqlite database file.
Are you using Firefox Sync to sync the bookmarks?
If you do then best is to disconnect temporarily from sync while repairing the places.sqlite file.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.
