If I delete emails on thunderbird, will they be deleted from my gmail account?

Running windows 8.1

Thunderbird has downloaded all the emails from my gmail account. I would like to know if these are physically stored on my laptop? If I deleted them from thunderbird, are they also removed from gmail, as I would like to keep them.

If you are using IMAP email you only download the headers and the messages are on the server. If you delete any messages via the computer you are deleting them off the server. If you are wanting to clean up your inbox make a new folder and move your keeper message there.
