When I click on the star next to a message the status changes to unread
After reading a message I click on the star to mark a message for attention. When I do that the message status changes to unread and the text is bold. If I click on the message again it is marked as read but the star goes away. I am using thunderbird 45.7.0 and godaddy ismy mail host. Please don't just say "godaddy is screwed up"

Start Thunderbird in safe mode and see if it works better. You can do this from the Help menu if it is already running or by holding the Shift key when launching.
FYI: Godaddy is screwed up but I doubt this is a problem caused by them this time.
