They often use a lot of memory, but that has not caused any crashes or warnings. My desktop is 4 gigs. Memory usage is often at 75% when several apps are open. I understand closing tabs reduces the memory usage. Could the number also reduce itself, just as it increased recently. I installed version 1709 yesterday.

For several versions now, Firefox has been a multi-process application. Originally just two processes, now potentially a lot more. If you want to experiment with the number, you can adjust the performance setting on the Options/Preferences page. Here's how:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the search box at the top of the page on the right side, type perf and Firefox should filter the page. Scan down to the "Performance Settings" section and uncheck the box for "Use recommended performance settings." This should enable a selector for how many content processes you want Firefox to create. Firefox will distribute tabs among these processes; you can't decide which tabs go into which processes.
