I have one or two thousand bookmarks on my Firefox browser. So I want to search for one in particular. I do "Show All Bookmarks", and then enter that bookmark name in the search box at upper right. It finds it. Yay! It tells me the name, location, and "Last Modified" date. But the location given is just the URL. I want to know WHERE in my Firefox library that bookmark is. What folder is it in?? If I want to move it or otherwise manage it, it sure would be handy to know where it is!

I could just erase that bookmark, and then "Bookmark this Page" to book mark it all over again. But that seems like a crappy strategy.

How do I get Firefox to tell me WHERE that bookmark is located? Folder? Subfolder?

Unfortunately, there is no built-in way to view the containing folder from Firefox bookmark search results. It has been this way for as long as anyone can remember.

Workaround: Using the Edit Bookmark Panel

If you are currently viewing a bookmarked page, the "star" icon the address bar should turn blue. You can click the star to view the containing folder. By clicking the little "v" icon to the right of the folder name, you can view it in its context in the "tree."

There are at least two problems with this workaround:

(i) You may not wish to load the page right now. (ii) If the original address now redirects, then this doesn't work (blocking redirects is annoying).

Workaround: Using an Add-on

Here are two bookmark search add-ons that provide folder context that you could look into:

Hopefully one of those methods will work well for you.

Note that you can switch to "Work Offline" mode to prevent opening the bookmarked page.

Thank you! That gives me what I need. Kind of strange that the bookmark search routine doesn't offer this capability, but that star leads me straight to the location of the bookmark. (I always wondered what that star was for ...)
