I try to keep my Deleted folder to a reasonable size by using Ctrl+Del to permanently delete unwanted emails straightaway. However, this does not work unless it is one email at a time. Does anyone know of a way to permanently delete a selected block of emails?

I don't see that here; try safe mode (hold Shift when launching TB) and also try the context menu to test if the keyboard is faulty

Ctrl+Del has no effect here, but Shift+Del bypasses Trash when applied to one or a selection of messages. Delete is also available from the right-click menu.

My apologies. I meant Shift-Del, not Ctrl-Del. Apply the keystroke to a single selected email and it is permanently deleted but, apply to a selection of more than one, and they all just go into the Deleted folder.
