If I click on an e-mail address link in a web page instead of a blank message opening I always get a pop up screen with a log-in for googlemail. I do not have and do not want a googlemail account. I just want to be able to send e-mails using Outlook.

I forgot to say in my last reply that I tried changing to 'always ask me' for the mail programme in FF, but that does not work either, I still get the gmail pop up
With Firefox closed, delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in your Profile folder. Firefox will re-create that file when it is opened the next time.

Sorry - tried that and it doesn;t make the slightest difference. i still get the same pop up window telling me to sign in or sign up to Gmail and no e-mail window.
Maybe a setting in the Google Toolbar extension that you have installed is overriding the "mailto" setting in Firefox preferences. Disable the GTB extension and see if helps.
Hallelulah, hallelulah, hallelulah! there was a setting on the google toolbar that said"use gmail for mailto links" and it had a tick in it. Just unticked it and hey presto. thanks
