I am using a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.8 and Firefox 9.0.1. This same problem has happened on my iMac with OSX 10.5. in the past, but eventually went away by itself.

I typically have 4-6 tabs open, and reload these tabs whenever I restart the Mac. I always shut the Mac down at the end of the day. This problem has just started. FF 9.0.1 has been working properly till now.

When I try to quit Firefox, the window closes, but the Firefox menus stay and the blue dot under the Firefox icon in the dock remains. However, I can't open another Firefox window. I can go into the Finder and work with other programs, but Firefox just stays semi-active -- loaded but I can't do anything with it. The menus are active in the sense that they drop down, but they don't do anything. When I try to force quit by control clicking on the Firefox dock icon, it has the normal quit option. If I play around with it and flip back and forth between the Finder and the suspended animation Firefox, eventually I can get the Force Quit option to appear, and the I'm ok. If I try to shut the Mac down, sometimes it just won't, other times a message will come up that Firefox is not responding and gives me the option to force quit -- which then works and the Mac shuts down afterwards.

What is going on here and how to I fix it?
