I sometimes need to use symbols like schwa, open o &c. In WordPad and Opera I do this by Alt+601, Alt+596 &c I discovered here http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/259/index.htm. In Firefox & Thunderbird Y, T &c appear instead, so I have to create the schwa, open o &c elsewhere and copypaste it here (that works: ə, ɔ). Is there some setting I could change so that the keyboard shortcut would work in Fx & TB as well?

Make sure that Num Lock is on if you want to use Alt + number to enter characters.
