MP3 files will not automatically open in iTunes
I changed my download preferences so that MP3 files should automatically open in iTunes once they are finished downloading. However, they do not. The files are downloaded to a temp folder on my C drive instead of the downloads folder on my D drive. I can open the enclosing temp folder but I cannot play the song in iTunes from there. Instead I must move it to any other folder and then it will play.

This could be related to support in Firefox 21 and later for using Windows Media Player components to play MP3s (and other MPEG-encoded media) in the native HTML5 audio player. Try disabling that feature as follows and see whether you get the behavior you want:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the filter box, type or paste media and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click media.windows-media-foundation.enabled to switch its value from true to false. Not sure whether this takes effect immediately when you reload the tab you were in or whether you need to restart Firefox before it takes effect.
Does that work for the files you want to open in iTunes?
Unfortunately no. This might be an iTunes issue in that case. To the next forum! Thanks for your help though.
Firefox stores files that are passed to an external program in the temp folder.
Only if you download and save a file then the file is saved to the specified folder.
You can try to delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.
