Several of these kinds of threads, but none are resolved and all are archive. FF won't open a link when it is clicked on in the skype program. Safe mode does nothing. FF is current.

Please try to set Firefox as the default program as well as as check the mime type preference Applications panel - Set how Firefox handles different types of files

If this is happening with all external links: In the "about:config" feature of Firefox, select the preference "browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external 

   To open links in the current tab, Enter:  1
   To open links in new windows, Enter:  2
   To open links in new tabs of the current window, Enter:  3
