How do I get rid of the new version that will not permit me to choose my search engine?
I just want my old version that functions properly back. I can no longer choose search engines. Can't search Amazon or Ebay. Don't want to install work arounds on my computer.

hello acronshaw, all your search providers will appear once you start typing a search term into the search bar... this has been a change in the search bar in firefox 34 - the new behaviour will make it easier to set one single default search engine but to use different providers on a one-off basis. its workings are explained in Search bar - add, change and manage search engines on Firefox
your answer to the problem does not work. I can no longer choose my search engine -- such as Amazon or ebay. When I begin typing in the search box, all I get is a list of search words -- not the search engine. I can no longer choose the search engine with the updated program. How do I get rid of the update?
in this case please go to the firefox menu ≡ > options > search and male sure that amazon, ebay and others are enabled as one-click search engines, so that the information from my first post will work...
yes, they are enabled with a check in the box next to them. But they don't display in the search engine box with the upgraded version.
can you try to replicate this behaviour when you launch firefox in safe mode once? if not, maybe an addon is interfering here...
Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems
I don't know what safe mode is. I closed and relaunched Fire Fox, and it remained the same. The program worked fine before the upgrade.
safe mode is explained in this link: Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems
In safe mode, the change search engine icon is visable, but it does not provide a list of search engines as it used to. It gives me the option of changing the default search engine
ok, thanks for reporting back - this means that one of your installed addons (probably search related) is interfering with the new search bar. you can try disabling them one by one and see which one blocks the different search providers.
this is a very new machine. I am careful not to download anything I don't need. How do I check these add on's? And why did they have no effect on the older version of the same browser?

could you go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information, copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum? this might give us a clue what is going on...
When I hit menu, there is no help screen
that's behind the (?) button

thanks, according to reports on its addon page the "Search Site 4.4" extension is breaking the new one click search capability in firefox 34 - so you might want to keep it disabled until there is an update for it available...
this troubleshooting information also shows that you had some crashes recently - you probably can solve those when you disable hardware acceleration in the firefox menu ≡ > options > advanced > general (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).
hardware acceleration makes no difference. I don't see how to disable search site option. It appears that I can no longer use the search box until Mozilla fixes the update.
"Search Site 4.4" is a third-party addon that you have installed under the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions & would need to disable there as well. there is not much that mozilla can do about it...
So, the conclusion is that the new release is screwed up. And I will not upgrade my other machines. In view of the fact that the Yahoo toolbar installed itself in one of the previous upgrades, I really didn't need It in the search box anyway.
No, the "Search Site 4.4" extension that you have installed that has broken the new Search Bar. The developer of that extension needs to update it or pull it from the Addons website, and notify Mozilla to "block" that extension so that Firefox will disable it for all users who have it installed. The responsible thing for that developer to do.
Disable that extension and you shouldn't see that problem.
