Fails to respond each time I try to attach any document
when attaching document the documents window opens, but when trying to attach any document it comes up with not responding

Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

What is your anti-virus software?
AVG and Microsoft security essentials, both of which I have run for years with Mozilla
