I accidentally clicked on something. Now on the left side there appears a "page" If I click within that area it does what that page would normally do. ( It is a password protected site) I uninstalled firefox then reinstalled it. This thing still shows up.

Normally when I go to this site I have to enter a password. Now just by starting firefox I can get into this site without a password.

Plus I need the space on the left side to make my screen bigger.

I am writing this question from another computer as the help screens are partially obscured on the other computer by this unwanted display! Please help. I do not know the proper "keywords" to get rid of the unwanted feature.

Thanks George

First, to log out of that page, you can try destroying its cookies. Honestly, I don't know if this works in the sidebar, but let's try it. Either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page (right-click > reload arrow icon). Does that kick you out of the password protected part of the site?

Then, with respect to how that page opened up there in the first place, please check your bookmark(s) for the site: right-click the bookmark and choose Properties. Then look toward the bottom of the dialog for "Load this bookmark in the sidebar" and if it's checked, uncheck the box.

Does that help?

Yes I looked at the cookies and deletd them all. I also deleted all of the passwords. After this step I got the message that I was no longer logged on. This is what I wanted. Then I found the X button and closed that section. This 'page" stopped appearing when I restarted browser. The bookmark that started causing this problem I had deleted before reporting this problem. The puzzling part was that this bookmark related page would show althogh the bookmar had been deleted. Thanks for the help. I just followed the steps you indicated. George
