Went to look at history.

Recent history was fine, did not go back far enough. When I looked at "all history", there was nothing newer than last January.

Obviously this cannot be correct.

Remember, RECENT history was fine, it just did not go back far enough. It was "all" history that was not correct

Keep an eye on the earliest history entry. Does it also disappear? Did anything happen back January?

Profile data can be removed or not recorded several ways;

  • 1) Running Firefox in Private Mode (nothing is recorded)
  • 2) Privacy settings; (In the address bar, type about:preferences#privacy<enter>)
  • 3) Many disk cleaners and anti-virus type programs can remove data from browsers. Open their settings and have them leave the browsers alone.
  • 4) Mal-ware.

Remember, the RECENT history is fine.

All cleaners ignore FF data

Malware is unlikely, the machine is swept regularly, and uses a firewall.

Privacy settings are not the issue

Not using private mode.

It is possible that there have been problems with places.sqlite or that history otherwise got deleted in January if you have kept all history since that time.

You can check if you have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop in case the Refresh feature in Firefox has been used and a new profile has been created.

Just keep an eye out and let us know if anything else disappears.

The history between January and now is NOT there. That is the issue.

And, the recent hiistory does not seem to be added onto what is there, or there WOULD BE history since January.

There was a problem back then, when one of the first of the Quantum version updates apparently failed. I got back my bookmarks, etc, but one of the sqlite type files was totally fouled up (there seem to be a number of types of those files, for different purposes).

FF was reloaded completely at that point, and seems to have worked right since. But I do not know when I last used the full history view.

I THINK it has worked since then, because I seem to recall using the history function since the reload. In that case one of the more recent updates has AGAIN fouled up something. If so, then it is referencing the wrong history file, it must be using the one from before the re-load which was back in January.

It makes sense to me that it is a fouled up new version, that is happening more and more now. FF used to be completely reliable, but Quantum seems to be really BUGGY. That is ESPECIALLY noticeable with the way updates work (or more specifically how they foul up).

OK. It did not much at all, but stated that the databases (I think that is what it said) were "sane".

That should mean there was no problem. Keep an eye on the last history.
