Updated my thunderbird password some time ago and I do not remember what it is. check in the saved passwords dialog box and it is not there. is there a way to enter a new password without knowing the old password.

There is no Thunderbird password. If you haven't told Thunderbird to remember your account password, and if you don't remember the password, you'll have to check for password recovery options with your email provider.
