I put my computer on airplane mode briefly, and now Thunderbird can't log in to gmail.

For two of my five linked accounts, I get the message "Sending of password for user xxxxxx@gmail.com did not succeed. Mail server pop.googlemail.com responded: Username and password not accepted."

Of the other three accounts, two are gmail and one isn't, and they are all loading correctly.

This happened after placing the computer on airplane mode briefly to test a problem on another device.

I can load gmail correctly using the existing password through the browser interface, so it's not a password problem.

I have deleted the passwords in password manager and re-entered them, to no avail.

I did restart the computer. Also, the last time I closed and reopened Thunderbird, it installed updates, but still no change.

In the 'Suddenly can not login in anymore' section here, it says:

"Gmail routinely blocks logging into a POP account so that they can show you a message. You need to login to webmail using a browser to clear it [6]. Sometimes you can't log in because Gmail thought something suspicious happened, and set a captcha. Thunderbird has no concept of a captcha, you need to login to webmail using a browser to clear it. Similar problems can appear if you use a VPN due to Gmail detecting that your IP address is from a location far from where you normally log in. This can cause security exceptions, and force you to periodically login to google to tell them that the remote login was you.

If you get a popup later on that you have to sign in to the Google account again, and then a "cookies disabled" web page you need to either enable cookies in Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Web Content or add an exception for Google. [7] "

Log into your google account and see if there is a warning about 'Recent Activity' that you can accept.

I have been through the google captcha screen at least 20 times now, clicking the captcha in the browser and then clicking the Retry button in Thunderbird.

While it is functioning, it is not clear that my problem is solved. I reinstalled Thunderbird out of frustration, which was the wrong thing to do. I use Thunderbird on POP and basically never visit the browser interface, and in my attempts to rebuild my message history in Thunderbird, it's downloading maybe 25000 messages. I concede this is ridiculous. Right now it's in January 2018.

If it was successful (at least, I think I've figured this out), it will continue to download messages through real time, and I will update with another response.

Yes. In case it helps anyone else, finding the google captcha link and clicking through that step is the answer to this problem.
