will not play vidoes in media player either.

The main change in Firefox 89 related to sound is that the mute button doesn't appear until you hover over the tab. Instead, there is a text label on the tabs below the page title with the media status. (The functional bits about playing sound haven't changed, as far as I know.)

Does this seem to be related to the mute button, or unwanted muting?

I think someone mentioned in another thread that they could see the volume slide down to zero on videos, but I don't know whether the same kind of thing is happening for you.

Could you test in Firefox's Safe/Troubleshoot Mode? In that mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running:

You can restart Firefox in Safe/Troubleshoot Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Any improvement?

It still will not play in troubleshooting mode. I can see the volume is on on the tab, no sound.

Thanks for checking that. In the Windows 7 Volume Mixer, does the Firefox slider show some activity -- this would indicate that Windows is receiving audio output from Firefox. To open the Volume Mixer, right-click the little speaker icon in the Notification Area / Task Tray of the Windows Taskbar. This screenshot is from Windows 10 but it's very similar.

It does show the bars working there on the volume mixer, the sliders show green and some movement like they are getting vibrations but still no actual sound.

One possibility is that Firefox's audio is being sent to a device that is turned off or disconnected (such as USB or Bluetooth). It can be difficult to find out. If the current output device slider isn't moving along with Firefox's, is there is triangle to check another output device?

I don't have any USB or bluetooth on it. I don't understand what you mean. I have tried turning on and off extensions and nothing works still no sound on youtube or other videos.

In my screenshot, left column, next to Speaker/HP, there's a triangle to view other output devices. Do you have anything like that?

I don't fully understand Firefox's list of output devices on the Troubleshooting Information page. Your shared output devices list indicates there are two enabled audio devices and one that has a status of unplugged but not disabled:

  • Speakers (VIA HD Audio) - Enabled
  • SPDIF Interface (TX1) (VIA HD Audio) - Enabled [unclear whether this is input or output]
  • Headphone (VIA HD Audio) - Disabled
  • NVIDIA Output (NVIDIA High Definition Audio) - Unplugged

No idea whether that is relevant.

I see this on the mixer with only one mozilla firefox spot one not 2 as above. how do I go to somewhere to enable that other headphone that shows disabled in that troubleshooting? I don't know where that is.

I will need to check the nvidia I don't see it unplugged here but sound is not working on my work computer in my office at work since the update either and I don't have navidia or it's drivers at work. I updated all my drivers before I asked this question. I just refreshed firefox and still no sound.  :( tests on system sounds do not work either.

I can't think of anything else unfortunately. I don't know whether you have ever connected headphones to whatever controller the speakers are connected to, or whether it's a capability without an actual port. ??
