I have been a faithful Firefox user for many years.  However, I am on the verge of switching to Chrome.  The problem: after my Firefox updated recently, a horizontal scroll bar appeared at the bottom of my browser for some - but, oddly, not all - tabs.  Most annoyingly, this happens for my gmail-based email app.  This means that, among other things, I am constantly having to scroll right and then back left when I read my email.

Happily, I tried out Chrome and found that it has no horizontal scroll bar when I use my email app.  This issue is annoying enough to me that I am quite willing to invest the time to make the wholesale switch from Firefox to Chrome.  Before I do, though, I thought I'd write in and ask if there's any way of getting rid of the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of my screen. If so, I'll stick with Firefox, as I have otherwise been very happy with the browser for a long time. I've googled this and there appear to be some over-my-head explanations of how to get rid of this with HTML code, as best as I can tell...I am asking for a user-friendly/plain English solution for someone who is not a programmer (e.g., I have no idea what "css" means). Zooming in/out, for the record, doesn't fix the issue.

Zooming out to 30% still doesn't fit all the content in the screen? Make sure the window is maximized (Win+↑).

Does it still happen in Troubleshoot Mode?

You can look at this thread:

  • /questions/1384204 Since the last update, the Firefox screen does not fit my system setting(125%)

If setting browser.display.os-zoom-behavior = 0 doesn't work for you then you can create a new Number pref on the about:config page and set its value to 100. Paste ui.textScaleFactor in the search bar and select the Number radio button and click the '+' button to add the new Number pref, enter the value (100) and click the blue OK button to confirm.

  • about:config => ui.textScaleFactor = 100

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. On the warning page, you can click "Accept the Risk and Continue" to open about:config.

Zeroknight: thanks.

a) When I zoom out to the maximum possible degree (30%), the scroll bar is still there, per the attached screenshot (and as the screenshot makes clear, the window is maximized).

b) *But* when I open Firefox in safe mode, per your suggestion, the problem does indeed go away! So, my question now is: what does this mean in terms of how I can fix the problem given that I don't want to remain in safe mode permanently (as I lose other functionality that I want, such as my bookmarks toolbar among other things)?

Really appreciate the help,

Zeroknight: following up on my reply to you a moment ago, when I reopened Firefox in regular (not safe) mode, the horizontal scrollbar is gone. It appears that simply opening the software in safe mode and then re-opening as usual fixed the problem. I have no idea why, but I'll file this under "don't look a gift horse in the mouth." Thanks again for the helpful response!

Cor-el: you were next up but I seem to be OK now. But I appreciate your reply and I'll try your fixes if the problem recurs.
