Firefox has been running fine for years (currently 3.6) but then would not load, with error message FF already running. Reboot allowed FF to open, but subsequently after closing net traffic running at max DSL assigned rate. Ran AV scan--nothing, Ran system restore (twice) without effect. Managed uninstall (after reboot) but could not successfully re-install any version of FF3. Saved all default-profile files to temp folder to copy back to new profile. This did not work. Last installation attempt FF setup did not create profile folder When FF installed but not opening, there are two iterations of firefox.exe running as system processes. I would very much like to get this working--I will not use IE, and am not wild about Google Chrome.

To add to he above, I have been able to open FF in safe mode, and can therefore now open the error console. There are multiple warnings, but I am unable to interpret them

You are definitely not alone. There are several threads with what appears to be this same, Catch-22 problem. Uninstall won't allow uninstallation for a clean reinstall because "a copy is running", but the alleged copy cannot be found. Ghosts. Voodoo. I checked the profile.ini file and it seems correct; this has been suggested but is not the answer, not for me anyway.
