Firefox was working fine yesterday, but on coming into work today it crashes on Startup. It also crashes on Startup in safemode. I was using Firefox 6.0.2, and have now updated to 7.0.1 but this has not fixed the issue. I have run windows update to make sure windows is up to date, which did not fix the issue, and I am currently running a full virus scan.

Glad it worked, & thanks for posting back and confirming that.

Obviously some users will not be happy with registry hacks, and some will be on machines locked down so they are unable to do that, some will not even be able to downgrade firefox, and so may need to wait for a fix from Oracle (or Mozilla Firefox).

If you mark the thread solved, by clicking alongside the post whilst logged in it should help others find the answer.

Crash report ID:2c41fda2-722b-4ec0-90c3-18a2e2111004

Signature: [@ mozcomp.dll@0xab51 ] includes a related bug 680927

The likely problem is use of certain Oracle etc software, the developer Oracle being aware of the problem and working on a fix.

Meanwhile there is a registry hack as a potential workaround, or the simpler workaround of downgrading temporarily to firefox 3.6.23.

See also /questions/880780#answer-253217 Are you able to confirm you use such software ?
(Startup crash in mozcomp.dll with Oracle Enterprise, F5 Networks, Passlogix V-GO, IBM Tivoli Access Manager SSO)

P.S.
Presumably both the searches from AAQ and the crash-stats offer of a Mozilla search must be filtered, maybe only look for solved and helpful threads, and miss many ongoing bug threads.

Try therefore advanced search options eg: from /search?a=2

Hi John99, Yes, I'm afraid I defintitely will have Oracle software on this PC, but I can't remove it as it is my work PC. I took the tip through the link and dowgraded to 3.6.23 and I am up and running again.

thanks

Well, I wouldn't call it solved exactly, more a working workaround until it is solved... But I'll click it

Thanks, I agree, but until marked it is not showing up in search results.

Thank you. I uninstalled the current version and installed 3.6. After installation I went into tools-options-advanced-update and unchecked the automatic update option so I wouldn't be upgraded again to the non-working version.

With luck there will be a two pronged approach to the fix.

Oracle ( ? & maybe IBM) will fix anything in their software that causes the problem. If the problem goes away in firefox 3.6 but is present in Firefox 7 it indicates a regression problem with Firefox, and hopefully Firefox developers will be able to track down and fix that.

There is also a registry hack as a workaround, as i mentioned above; but the majority of users will probably not want to try that, or in a corporate environment will need the IT department to consider that.

P.S.
possibility this may crash Firefox 8.0b1 but could show as a hang or crash; not caught by the crash reporter, possibly with the Event Log showing Faulting module name: mozmolt0.dll (from Bug680927 c#42)
