when opening a webpage (such as sky news) always opens on a new tab.
So i search for a web page such as sky news and this bring up a list as normal, however, when i click on the webpage I would expect the webpage to open on the same tab. But it does not, it opens it on a new tab!!??

update ur firefox browser version otherwise reset ur browser

I have tried both of your suggestions, however, these have not resolved the issue.
Anything else you might be able to think off??

hi david, in case you are searching on google, there is a preference within google's settings which controls that behaviour: https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/425
