After installing Private Intenet Access VPN, i had problems until I asked them to whitelist my ISP's email servers. Could then receive and send messages.

A day later the problem of sending emails returned and when I tried to change incoming and sending mail account settings as per ISP tech support, Thunderdbird interface would allow creation of a new mail account and the setting of it to default, then the new account was gone after a restart of TB and the old settings back in place...

One odd thing is that I can't logon to my ISP's webmail at all, just spins endlessly when I enter the account name & password. But it sending and receiving emails works fine from my smartphone.

Can't receive or send emails now, so I may have to choose another email client.

sounds to me like your VPN is toast. The only thing not on your computer is working. funny but true.

If you can not use web mail, your problem is most emphatically not Thunderbird.

The VPN is definitely causing problems for sending emails. if I disconnect from the VPN, I can send messages thru TB. So it's no a long term solution, but maybe if I could get TB to accept the settings my ISP and VPN provider have both given me, then things would be OK.

I don't think that the VPN is preventing me from editing, deleting or adding new email accounts under TB Options menu.

I go thru the motions for each operation, and it appears to work (except for creating the new IMAP account, there the TB interface just won't respond at the last click of the process), but upon restart of TB, all the deleted accounts are back and the SMTP account settings have reverted.

Btw, all add-ons are disabled.

So how could VPN affect TB account settings?

well lets see..... you not actually adding any account if the last click is not doing anything. The wizard expects to be able to verify the settings. If Thunderbird is not communicating well with the server, be it because of anti virus or your VPN, the setting will not be verified, therefore you will not be able to create the account.

As your to your deleted accounts, are you deleting them with the account actions button at the bottom of the account settings dialog? " Have you configured the proxy settings in Options > Advanced >network and disk space?
