Same problem on two computers: When I updated from Linux Kernel from 4.4.0.31 for one computer, and from 4.4.0.34 on the other the update broke Thunderbird. TB will now not get any new messages. I tried going back to 4.4.0.31 and TB is still broken. On one computer I un-installed TB, and then re-installed it, and TB was still broken.

One computer has an AMD processor, the other has an Intel processor. Both have lots of RAM (6GB on netbook, and 12GB on laptop). Poth are running Ubuntu 16.06.1LTS with Kernel 4.4.0.36. One computer has been connected to two different ISPs, one in Charlotte, NC, the other in Staunton, Va. I have not changed any account settings in all of this.

I have some other problems with TB but for now the not being able to get messages (emails) downloaded is the biggest problem.

I need help in unbreaking my Thunderbird application.

Here is the solution: From my ISP IT technician: He said that Mozilla (TB) last update changes some of the account settings. Onece he and I had worked through the settings and got them all correct again, the new messages came pouring in.

Short answer Mozilla broke itself.

My experience is that settings can randomly change, notably during an update of Thunderbird.

It's a bug, not intentional.

You mean Thunderbird. Mozilla is the name of company and not the email client and actually does not make Thunderbird anymore even though it is still called Mozilla Thunderbird.
