How do I stop Thunderbird from opening multiple emails when I select them for deletion or other actions

When I select multiple emails to perform an action (move or delete them) Thunderbird frequently opens all of them. I want to select the action myself, not have auto open.

Try a different mouse. There is no auto open in Thunderbird. It takes a double click.
