Why did Refresh Firefox COMPLETELY eliminate all of my bookmarks?
Firefox was running slowly and a banner at the bottom suggested I refresh Firefox. I saw a warning that my custom settings would revert to default, but I had NO IDEA that all of my bookmarks would be deleted.
I tried to follow Firefox instructions to recover my bookmarks (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/restore-bookmarks-from-backup-or-move-them) and made a back-up file of yesterday's bookmarks. Firefox "couldn't process" my recovery of them and now I cannot find the document of my bookmarks -- the one I JUST made -- anywhere in my library. When I try to repeat the procedure, I click "Show All Bookmarks" and nothing happens.
PLUS! Since refreshing Firefox, I am unable to bookmark a page using any method I know of.

I was halfway through the most complicated solution on this thread and was afraid to go further without assistance to make sure I didn't delete necessary things. Eventually my computer just fell into a coma so I rebooted it. A few hours afterward, my bookmarks all mysteriously reappeared!
Thanks to all for your help. I appreciate it.

Hi. I noticed in the new version of Firefox that my bookmarks were hidden (not lost). Perhaps someone else out there can help with that because I can't remember what I did to "find" them again and make them visible.
RE: bookmarking, on the new version I discovered that you have to click on the star at the right IN the web address panel. If you have that star IN the address panel at the far right, try clicking on that and see if that bookmarks the page for you. Hope that helps.
See:
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.
- use "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
- Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Directory:
Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Okay. Here's how I resolved the problem in the new version:
I resolved this by
* clicking on the stack of books at the top right (new version) * clicking on Bookmarks * clicking on Bookmarking Tools * Then clicking Add Bookmarks Tool to Menu
After that the Bookmarks tool appeared and I could see all of my bookmarks as before. I hope that helps.
