If I try to drag and drop a new bookmark onto the bookmark icon (the star with the line under it), it USED to open up Bookmarks and I could place the new bookmark where ever. That no longer works.

I CAN drag/drop into a folder on the menu bar but not into bookmarks directly.

The "Edit This Bookmark" dialog that opens if you click the highlighted star has a checkbox with "Show editor when saving" (shortcut key in the dialog is Alt+S). This item is at the bottom just above "Remove Bookmark" and "Done".

  • browser.bookmarks.editDialog.showForNewBookmarks

You can add the "Bookmarks Menu" button that shows the bookmarks in a drop-down list to the Navigation Toolbar via these steps:

  • click the bookshelf 57 library icon icon on the Navigation Toolbar or alternatively use the Library menu in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button New Fx Menu drop-down list
  • click Bookmarks
  • click "Bookmarking Tools", then click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"
The Bookmark Menu button Bookmark Menu icon (star on tray) should appear on the Navigation Toolbar.

You can also drag the Bookmarks Menu button from the Customize palette to the Navigation Toolbar

Hmm, I see what you mean (looking at the "Developer Edition" of Firefox 69). When I drag from the lock icon or a link from the page and hover the Bookmarks Menu button (), the menu doesn't expand to show the menu. If you drop, the link is added at the end of the menu.

It doesn't seem like something that would be changed intentionally, so perhaps it's a side effect of some other change?

This is a bit difficult to search in the bug tracking system; I didn't find anything recently filed for drop bookmark so maybe it hasn't been reported. Do you want to try searching, or file a new bug?

I have no clue what you mean. If I bring up a site that is bookmarked, the star at the end of the URL box is blue. Right clicking that brings up only "remove from menu bar".

Okay. If i click on the 3 dots near the end of the URL box, I get the Edit Bookmark. But the check is already there.

If you re-read my post, you'll see I obviously have the bookmark icon already there. Else how would I know it doesn't open when I hover with a dragged tab?

No worries, someone will sort that out. Hopefully it can get fixed in the couple of weeks left before the "code freeze" for Firefox 69.

I hadn't realized that you were using the Beta version. Possible workarounds that work for me are dragging the tab to Bookmarks menu (menu bar) or drag the tab to the bookmarks sidebar.

Possibly another regression from this bug:

Im having the same issue. No DEV or BETA release. Just the old stable release. :) HOw to fix it ? =)

Hi Bruno Drago, unfortunately this got broken in Firefox 69, and by the time it was reported, the fix didn't make it into the release of Firefox 69. It will be fixed in Firefox 70.

I think until then, assuming you aren't interested in running pre-release test versions, you could use these workarounds:

(1) Drag and drop options

(A) Open the Bookmarks Sidebar using Ctrl+b (on Mac: Command+b) and then drag and drop into there

(B) Drop onto the Bookmarks menu on the top menu bar. On Windows, you can turn on the top menu bar using either:

(2) Other options

If you are dragging and dropping the current page address, you could switch your approach: expand the menu to the folder where you want to add a bookmark, right-click, add bookmark -- this requires an add-on:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/bookmark-tab-here/

I'm sure there are other methods I'm not even aware of.

I have the exact same problem. After years (+10) of using this functionality (drag&drop tab + open bookmarks hovering over icon in toolbar) for organizing my bookmarks it's unbelievably frustrating to be browsing without it. Not to mention the impact on productivity this is causing me.

It says Firefox 70 has release date 2019-10-22. I hope this gets fixed tomorrow because it's been over one month of nightmarish browsing, enduring this bug. First time this functionality has been broken in a decade. And it's bread&butter vanilla firefox.

Unfortunately, tomorrow is only 2019-09-22, so you will still be waiting another month.

If this is an insufferable situation and none of the previously mentioned workarounds suit your needs, you could consider switching from the standard release to the Extended Support Release of Firefox 68. This article has more information: Switch to Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) for personal use.

I am now to rel "72.0.2" AND STILL can not "Drag and Drop" to my desktop AND do not understand WHY DRAGGING A Bookmark TO MY Desktop is SUCH A HUGE SECURITY RISK that would make Mozilla remove that "handy" function.

BUT today, ONE STEP FURTHER, I can not get Firefox 72.0.2 to Manually bookmark an URL PERIOD. Even clicking on "BOOKMARK THIS PAGE"....

Are we "kissing" "Bookmarks" GOODBYE?

Hi jagman55

This thread is about creating a new bookmark by dragging a tab or a link to the Bookmarks Menu (star on a tray Bookmark Menu icon (star on tray)) icon on the Navigation Toolbar.
There had been an issue that this didn't open the Bookmarks Menu drop-down list.

Creating a desktop shortcut shouldn't be a problem and in current Firefox releases you should be able to drag the padlock icon on the location bar to the desktop to create a shortcut to this web page.

Hi, I have the problem, that I can not move (sometimes only...) my bookmarks there, if I wanna add a Bookmark, I just drag the current Tab into my bookmarks and wanna move it into my folders. But they can only be throwed into this list... normally I can drag the bookmarks there to rearrange them or to move them in subfolders.

But sometimes, like now, it doesnt work, I have to go into the Management window and THERE it works. (The button at the End ).

So why does this happen random and how to fix it?
