When I open a tab in Firefox, I cannot scroll left to right. there in no bottom scroll bar and the arrow keys are no help. I am using a laptop/monitor setup, and it does not work on either screen. This problem started when I brought my computer home from the office.

Hi megan.eichert, one possible problem is if the bottom of the Firefox window is hidden behind the Taskbar. Does it make any difference to modify the window size, for example:

  • switch between Maximized and Resizable (using the middle of the 3 windows buttons at the upper right)
  • manually resizing the Resizable window by dragging the lower right corner up and left

There also may be site-specific issues, such as:

  • sites that intentionally turn off the bar
  • sites that temporarily disable bars while you interact with an overlay (for example, subscribe dialogs on news sites) -- if you don't see an overlay, make sure an ad blocker isn't removing it

Another possible issue is cached pages or cookie data that are obsolete at your new work location:

Cache and Cookies

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that.

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode

If the above doesn't help, you could try Firefox's Safe Mode to temporarily deactivate extensions, hardware acceleration, userChrome.css and userContent.css modification files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

One possible move on your laptop: a two-finger swipe from left-to-right or right-to-left usually slide the page right and left when scroll bars are visible, and might work when they are not.

Thanks for your response. I tried all of these options, but non of them bring up the scroll bar or allow me to scroll on the keyboard.

Can you scroll up and down since you only mention issues with scrolling left/right ?

Yes, I can scroll up and down with the bar and the keyboard

Are you sure that there is content to the right end that requires scrolling ?

Does enabling auto-scroll has any effect ?

  • Options/Preferences -> General: Browsing: "Use autoscrolling"

Yes there is content. This page does not support my image type or I would upload it. I tried auto-scroll first, it was already enabled but doesn't make a difference either way

Try to rename/remove xulstore.json in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
