When I start up Firefox or click on the little house icon when it's already up, the start page always has "about.home" in the menu bar instead of "http://" and whatever the site address is. How to I make the opening bar read http:// permanently so that I can easily insert new addresses into it?

You can change the home page to whatever site that you want, for details see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page
