Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

The files key3.db & logins.json in the profile are required to recover passwords, and the bookmarks stored in the bookmarkbackups folder have the bookmarks stored, as does places.sqlite. If you save these files, then make a new profile, you should be able to put those files into it and perhaps that will fix the problem.
Install an older version of Firefox {web link} See if this installs properly.
Standard installers choke in download. Offline installers tried: 45 32 bit
45 64 bit {W10 64 dual core} 38 32 bit
All quit after extracting. All AV & AM shut off. All possible fixes in ASC9 & Tweaking.com Windows Repair. Clean scan with malwarebytes.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Safe mode makes no difference in installer behavior. Failure with every case and combination.
Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
- Download the Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop
*https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.
- Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
- (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
- (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
- It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
If you keep having problems then create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.
I found and deleted the partial firefox folder. Made a fresh download of the installer which extracted and quit just as it always does.
I was able to access my external hd which had ver. 40. It updated to 43, which continues to work. I still want to get a fresh install on the internal disk.

No, other versions also fail to install.
any version: installer extracts and quits without a trace.
It's possible the problem is your protection programs. As a test, disable them.

Shut down all AV and AM plus maintenance/repair programs. Also shut down firewall. No change.
