I removed the "smart mailboxes" directory, restarted Thunderbird, and sent a test message. I was able to get the "unified folders" check mark to hold, but I have no unified folder either at the top or the bottom of the list. Any thoughts?

I found the problem. There are two "local folders" at the bottom of the page when I have "all folders" checked; the second one has to be opened; then, "unified folders" shows up.
