For example, EZDOWNLOAD does not appear to be a Mozilla product. I scanned the Terms & Conditions and failed to find it to be part of Firefox, even tho the FF emblem is present in the ad. This and other such products I encountered today seem to be aggressive and in-your-face advertising which I am suspicious of, since they allowed me no option to escape, and because I had to go thru Internet Explorer to get to Mozilla. This is all on my wife's computer for which the hard drive failed, so I have to reinstall nearly every program she needs. Back over the years I have installed FF on other computers without these complications I encountered today.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

You also have a old version of Firefox.... Please update too to prevent such security issues.

Also EZDOWNLOAD is fake, ALWAYS download from mozilla.org.

Where did you download Firefox and Thunderbird from?
Sounds like you got a "package" with a lot of unwanted extras!

You should only download than from official Mozilla websites.

Thank you for the specific names of these official sites. I downloaded them and everything appears to be working correctly. As I suspected, EZDOWNLOAD was a fake.

Thanks again, Phil

Very valuable suggestions. Tested Anti-malware first and got a clean report; now working thru the others.

I really appreciate the support given by the two responders. This has relieved the deep exasperation and helplessness I felt when I first encountered this problem.

Regards, Phil
