A single email from a contact continues to be sent over a 24 hour period.
Whenever I open my Thunderbird email there are another 5 or 11 or 15 of the same emails sent at 3:07 PM yesterday 06-25-14.

Log into your account at your email providers web mail page and delete the message there. If it is not on the server, Thunderbird cannot download it.
