What anti virus are you using? Does it have a password "vault" like Nortons? which regularly fails to get the message you have a new password and silently replaces the one Thunderbird sends (which you have just saved) with their old stale and incorrect one. Best approach is reboot into Windows safe mode with Networking and see if that works.
