Spelling doesn't work for abbreviations.
When writing for example "Sept." the word is marked as a spelling mistake and in the suggestion you see just the same word with the dot because the spelling machine apparently doesn't register the dot.

Simply click Add to dictionary in the drop down window and you will not get the msg. anmore.
