I've spent 4 or 5 hours trying to answer this question. When I started, I wanted to search mailboxes. I figured out other ways of doing it.

It produces the statement 'filters 'from me(0)' 'to me(0)' with little check boxes that are grayed out. It also says 'no messages match your search'. When I typed my term into the bar, there word was in the currently visible email.

When typing the term in the bar says 'search bing for ...' which I certainly don't want to do, but if I did.. why the comment about 'no messages'?

I have not seen a way to modify the search engine in the tool bar.

I've read all about global search, and deleting the global search index. It doesn't seem relevant.

I give up, but maybe I can save someone else 5 hours.

In addition to Global Search the search bar can also be used to perform an Internet search with the search engine you set. Default in Thunderbird is Bing. The 'no messages match your search' message indicates just what it says - no match. Have you tried rebuilding the search index? I think it is relevant.
