Very strange! Here's a different way to get to the auto-sync setting. Could you try it and let us know whether it works for you?
- In Firefox, press the menu button at the top-right
- Press Settings
- Press Sync (should be the very first option)
- The auto-sync checkbox should be at the top of the on the next window
