I installed FF 36.0 yesterday afternoon. Since then FF is a) slow to start - over a minute, b) slow to respond (same delay) when clicking a link in another program such as TBird. I have executed a refresh and cleared all cache and history. Still same problem even asterf numerous exits via the approved mechanism and restarts of Windows 7. THis is becoming annoying and time wasting. I also set the Norton Firewall setting for FF from Auto to Allow. Doesn't help

hi, other users have reported that this issue was caused and could be resolved by adjusting the settings of their norton software running on affected systems: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1048938#answer-696520

Have you actually bothered to read the whole thread?

The problem is within Firefox, playing with other installed software is only masking the issue. Neither of my systems are using Norton, one is using BitDefender and the other Kaspersky, so the antivirus software is not the problem. Another user thought it might be a conflict with Trusteer Rapport, but we aren't all using that. Mozilla appear to have addressed the issue in v36.0.1, but sadly failed to admit either a problem, or a solution.

sure i have bothered to read the thread - actually all people reporting with their security software here before were saying they are running norton. and that's the same picture in other similar threads. also see https://community.norton.com/en/forums/firefox-extreemly-slow-start (where it was reported that norton is investigating the issue)

i don't doubt that you had an issue with slow startup as well but it may have likely had a different cause than for most people reporting here. also there were no bug fixes in firefox 36.0.1 that would address any slow start-up issues, so i'll take it as a coincidence but not necessarily a cause-effect relation...

Well, it's Saturday and I've just installed 36.0.1 for the second time, done a refresh and still FF takes over a minute to start, and links from email take over 60 seconds.

So, I've put 35.0.1 back on - and performance is fine.

I have Windows 7 home premium and norton 360. When I had trusteer raport installed, firefox 36.0 and 36.1 took about 90 seconds to open. Assoon as I uninstalled trusteer firefox opened in under 5 secs. It sounds like eveyone having problems has come piece of software or otheer installed that firefox doesn't like. In view of the many varied eperiences, it may be difficult to pinpoint the problem.

I disagree. The only change we have made to our systems is the upgrade of Firefox. It is something within this upgrade that is conflicting with other programs. it is therefore up to Mozilla to undo whatever changes they made to Firefox , not to blame other software suppliers.

This problem has returned with FF 36.0.3 and the security update put on this morning.

Again, it is taking some 60 seconds from clicking a link in an email to the page opening. [Win 7, SSD C: drive]. I have Trusteer and Norton and will not take them off.

This problem appears to have been previously solved by one of Trusteer or Norton.

Why is it that Mozilla can't learn from that and not rush out so-called security fixes that then don't work with related users' security software?

If there isn't a properly considered response from Mozilla I shall return to FF 35.0.1

let me compare it this way, as i've seen this now for nearly ten years: after EVERY update there are users reporting that firefox is no longer able to connect to the internet & then it turns out their firewall blocks access either because it is misconfigured or doesn't properly handle a different version number of the firefox binaries, no matter which changes actually happened in firefox. so a firefox update may be the trigger for the problem but the cause lies somewhere else.

similar as in your described case - with all the users reporting about this it is pretty well established that a combination of norton security software and/or trusteer rapport were causing the slowdowns of the browser startup. mozilla cannot halt the shipping of highly critical security updates to its hundreds of millions of users because of third party software that is hooking into the browser or interfering with its behaviour in ways that may cause problems. so you would be far better off reporting the problem to norton & ibm as developer of trusteer so that they can address the problem in their respective code base as they apparently have done before. mozilla stopping the release of updates won't be the fix - in fact you may see a version 36.0.4 very soon...

Well philipp, you disappoint me. Once again a software developer blames everyone else when their new software conflicts with others, when no conflict existed before their update.

None of my three machines are using Trusteer or Norton. All three suffered slow startup after updating Firefox. My three machines are using XP, Vista and Win7. The XP and Win7 machines are using Kaspersky, the Vista one is using Bitdefender.

So something Mozilla changed has caused the conflict. This needs to be fixed, not point the finger at others.

philipp does not work for Mozilla in any way.

Here's what it looks like waiting for a link to open. And when it eventually does Fire Fox has a cute little message about taking so long! I spent hours in that loop on 36.0.1 - all to no avail.

I've been away for a few days. Installed FF36.0.4 this afternoon and startup and executing an email link are working well!

Surprising, as apart from installing 36.0.4 I'm not aware of changing anything else. Trusteer is Version: Emerald Build 1404.75 and Norton is 27.7.0.11!

I didn't have a problem with Firefox 36 except with Trusteer. The combination caused an opening delay in Firefox of up to 90 secs. When I uninstalled Trusteer, opening time dropped to 5 secs. Now that Firefox is up to 36.0.4 and Trusteer have updated to 1404.75, everything is working aok, again with about 5 secs opening time. There was never any conflict with my Norton 360 (likewise 27.7.0.11).
